What is Performance Analysis?
Performance analysis is a quite recent breakthrough within sport that is forever advancing. It is a way of creating both better players and teams in closed and open environments. There are lots of different areas within Performance Analysis that can be used to develop football and other sports. Not only is it one team that is usually examined, the opposition is also a key focus for a team or individual to find a team's strengths and weaknesses. Before performance analysis became popular and widespread it was very subjective and the information would be qualitative and unreliable, based on opinions with little evidence to back them up. However with video analysis, pictures, and other resources performance analysis is certainly more reliable and valid. From a coaches point of view, performance analysis is invaluable because it helps in creating better players and therefore winning more games. There are 3 main components of Performance Analysis which are; Notational, Video and observational. These 3 methods of analysis can be used to set goals and targets for a player. 'PA is now widely accepted among coaches, athletes, and sport scientists as a valuable as a valuable input into the feedback process' (Drust, 2010,p.921). The feedback process can both look at the bio mechanics of an individual athlete as well as the whole team and create long, medium and short term goals as a result.
